Nick Kowalenko, a child and
adolescent psychiatrist, is the director of a clinical service and works for the Northern
Sydney Health Service. From 1996 to 1997
Nick was a policy adviser to the New South Wales Health Department. He was a member of the
Commonwealth National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy Evaluation Working Group from 1996
to 1999. In 1998, he joined the board of OCD/TOPS, part of the NSW Mental Health
Association, which leads initiatives to encourage young people with anxiety disorders to
access early intervention programs.
Nick led a team which developed a staff education
and telehealth package that supports and maintains early intervention programs for young
people in the bush.
He collaborates with schools to
implement and evaluate adolescent depression prevention programs. With a broad range of
primary care providers (including general practitioners) he has developed policies and
initiatives to promote parental mental health and optimise infant development.
