National Steering Committee

The National Steering Committee was formed following the Second National Child and Adolescent Conference in Melbourne, 1996, in response to strong support from conference delegates and interest from previous conferences.

Since establishment, the steering committee has met on a regular basis to set direction and lay plans for the development of an Australian Association of Infant, Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health. The committee, in consultation with a wide range of interested groups and people developed a discussion paper with formed the basis of AICAFMHA's current Charter.

The steering committee was also actively involved in the Third National Conference held in Sydney during 1998. At this conference, a plenary session was held with a vote taken to continue to progress towards formalising a National Association.

An application was made to the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care for some funding, under the National Mental Health Strategy, to contribute to the establishment of the association. In March 1999, this funding was approved and the steering committee appointed a project worker to undertake the day-to-day activities necessary to meet the requirements for incorporation.
