The Third National Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference was hosted by NSW Health Department and was held on 23-25 July 1998 at the Sydney International Hilton Hotel. The conference was extremely successful, with over four hundred and sixty delegates attending from all states and territories of Australia and overseas including service providers, consumers and carers.

The major themes of the conference focused on:

  • the implications of the Second National Mental Health Policy for child and adolescent mental health;
  • best practice in mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention;
  • the development of an Australian Association for Infant, Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health; and
  • enhancing community and health service responsiveness to children and young people with special needs.

A comprehensive scientific program was organised over the three days of the conference, including international and national speakers. The Conference Scientific Committee, was chaired by Professor Joe Rey. The NSW Health Minister graciously agreed to open the conference.
