ARAFMI's Youth Services provides age-appropriate
information, counselling and support to young people who have a relative
with a mental illness. The service is offered to young people between the
ages of eight and eighteen who are living in the north or east metropolitan
regions of Perth. The Youth Services Officers work with the young person
within the context of their family to assist them to better understand and
cope with the impact that their relative's mental illness has on their life.
Most counselling occurs within the young person's home but office
appointments are also offered.
In addition to the individual/family counselling offered, Youth Services runs
two group programs. There is a "Kids Club" group offered in the school holidays
for 8-12 year-olds and an "ATOMIC" Youth Group for 13-17 year-olds that is
offered every two months.
Resources:
ARAFMI WA has produced the "Handle with Care" Workbook for eight to twelve
year-olds and the "Booklet for Young People About Mental Illness" for thirteen
to seventeen year-olds. Both these booklets provide age-appropriate information
to young people about mental illness and ways of coping with the practical and
emotional issues that they might be experiencing as a result of a loved one's
mental illness.
