Program Description 2 Camps per year for children aged 7-12 years who live in families affected by mental illness, either parent/carer or sibling. Pre & Post camp activities for the children attending camp. Peer support groups for A:children with parents with a mental illness & B: Children with siblings with a mental illness. Both of these groups are for 7-12 year old children. Peer support/psycho-educational groups within one primary school and one secondary school in Bendigo. Resource/support for other mental health clinicians within the Health care group. Resource/support/information etc. to teachers and other health/mental health/community social workers/psychologists etc primarily within Bendigo.
Evaluation Information Evaluation of the education/peer support programs offerred within the schools. These evaluations adhere to the EQUIp principles. Usually by way of questionnaire and verbal feedback from participants.
Evidence Has grown out of the CHAMPS camps model. Program has been running in different ways for over 5 years, and community and workers response has been favourable. Clinical experience of Project worker is in social work and family therapy, and she has had a great deal of experience in running peer support groups for children and young people. Also liaises closely with similar service providers in Melbourne (PATS etc) to develop program. Practice also informed by recommendations made in "Crossing The Chasm" Women & the Public Mental Health System in the Loddon Mallee Region 1998 and "Child Maltreatment and Parental Mental Health Problems" 2002, also a Bendigo Health Care group research paper. Also informed by "Crossing Bridges" Ed. Adrian Falkov 1998 Dept of Health UK.
Any other information This position has ongoing funding as a 19 hours per week position.
