| Program Description |
The MHCOP is a community based support service
at the Women's Health Care House for mothers who have a mental illness and
their children. The service offers group activities, indivudal support, a
kids group (pilot) and other information. The group activities are offered
to assist the women and their families reduce isolation in the community,
gain peer support, and promote health and well being. These include formal
groups, social and peer support groups, recreational groups such as a
school holiday programme and physcial activity and an annual holiday.
Individual support and advocacy is provided where needed and an outreach
service available. The kids group is called 'Da Adventure Kidz' and is
for 8-14 years olds who are part of the service. A fun and challenging
activity is held every 5-6 weeks to encourage the kids to develop new
skills, friendships and supports. This group is funded as a pilot for a
12 month period. |
| Evaluation Information |
An interim evaluation for the kids group
in the form of 2 questionaires (one for the kids and one for the mums)
has been undertaken and will be further investigated at the end of the
12 month period. The rest of the service is evaluated on an ongoing basis.
The service is consumer led with much consumer input and decision making. |
| Evidence |
The kids group is based on current literature
about the needs of COPMI and on previous peer support type groups run
elsewhere. Children and parents have input into programme. |
