Overview of Phase 2 of the COPMI Project

Introduction

The Hon. Trish Worth, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, and Federal Member for Adelaide announced further funding for the COPMI project at the launch of the resource materials from the first phase in April 2004 at the Adelaide Zoo. In June 2004 the Australian Infant Child Adolescent and Family Mental Health Association signed a two-year contract with the Australian Government to meet the following aims and objectives.

Aims and Objectives

The overall aim of the Children of Parents with a Mental Illness initiative is to promote better mental health outcomes for children of parents with a mental illness.

Objectives

To increase awareness and uptake of the COPMI good practice guidelines among individuals and services working with children of parents with a mental illness and their families in Australia.

To promote and support education and training of the health and other relevant workforces (eg. teaching, community, media) regarding the COPMI resources.

To increase awareness of the availability of resource materials complementary to the COPMI good practice guidelines and which are appropriate for children and family members affected by parental mental illness (eg. children, young people, parents, family support people).

Reference Group

A Reference Group representing all Australian States, and including service providers, experts in the field, consumers/carers and key bodies such as Auseinet and the Australian Divisions of General Practice, will provide advice to the project.

Clearinghouse function

The COPMI project provides a clearinghouse function in relation to programs available for children of parents with a mental illness and their families. The project is also currently collecting information about workforce development activities in the 'copmi' field and information about current and past evaluations of 'copmi' programs. This information will then be available to services and individuals wishing to commence or review work in either of these endeavours.
