COPMI Project Update - 05/07/2004

COPMI initiative Phase 2

I'm delighted to report that AICAFMHA has recently signed a contract with the Department of Health and Ageing for Phase 2 of the COPMI initiative. The overall aim of the COPMI project remains the same (i.e. "To promote better mental health outcomes for children of parents with a mental illness") and the objectives of the second phase build on the development of the resources within the first phase.

Objectives:
1) To increase awareness and uptake of the COPMI good practice guidelines among individuals and services working with children of parents with a mental illness and their families in Australia.
2) To promote and support education and training of the health and other relevant workforces (eg. teaching, community, media) regarding the COPMI resources.
3) To increase awareness of the availability of resource materials complementary to the COPMI good practice guidelines and which are appropriate for children and family members affected by parental mental illness (eg. children, young people, parents, family support people).

Tasks:
Some of the tasks within the new contract (over the next two years) include the following:
Hosting a COPMI stream on each of the 3 days of the AICAFMHA/TheMHS conference in September 2004 focusing on COPMI practice which supports the 'COPMI Principles and Actions' document.
Providing advice and/or support to state groups wishing to implement workforce development strategies and share information.
Liaising with state mental health departments regarding the implications of the 'Principles and Actions' document.
Developing and pilot testing a package regarding COPMI issues for Divisions of General Practice to use within GP education sessions in association with the Australian Divisions of General Practice (ADGP) to increase GP awareness of issues and resources available.
In partnership with other current national initiatives (eg Mind Matters, MindFrame, ResponseAbility and CommunitymindEd) promote inclusion of COPMI issues within training programs for teachers, journalists, and community workers.

Updates to continue

Paola and I will continue with the project and, with assistance from Sue Garvin at the AICAFMHA office, we will continue to provide an 'Update" on this site approximately every 2 weeks to keep you informed of the progress.
