COPMI Project Update - 10/06/2004

Resource List Additions

Paola Mason and I have recently read a children's picture book called "Can I Catch it Like A Cold? A story to help children understand a parent's depression". The book, by Gretchen Kelbaugh, is published by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Canada. Whilst some language in the book reflects its North American origin (e.g. 'Mom' works at a 'drugstore') we both thought the book was generally very informative for both children and their parents/carers. Aimed at children in the 5 to 9 year-old age range, it also provides an introduction that includes the topics "Why talk about depression at all?" and "How do I use this book?". Details about purchase of the book are listed on the Resource List (page 1).

The Centre also produces pamphlets for purchase entitled "When a parent has a bipolar disorder - What kids want to know." and "When a parent is depressed - What kids want to know." Details regarding the pamphlets are on page 11 of the Resource List.
