COPMI Project Update - 14/02/2003

COPMI Green Paper

Phil Robinson will be taking the draft "COPMI Green Paper" to the national Mental Health Promotion and Prevention Working Party (commonly known as the PPWP) meeting on February 25th. That group's feedback will be considered in the final development of the document which now will not be released for public comment until mid to late March 2003 at the earliest. Thankyou for your patience as I know many of you have been waiting for this document, previously planned to be released in mid-February.

Resource Development

Due to the delay in release of the COPMI Green Paper, work has slowed a little on the development of pilot web-pages for workers, which will provide specific information relating to the draft principles and guidelines and other targeted relevant information. However, the development of the other resources (the booklet for new and intending parents, the pamphlet for families and the promotional messages for children and young people) is progressing well. Thank you to the many people who have been assisting me in these endeavours - too many to name here and some unknown to me due to their feedback being passed on anonymously through a third person. I'm most grateful to you all.

GPs

The COPMI project team is working with representatives of the ADGP (Australian Divisions of General Practice) National Divisions Youth Alliance and National Primary Mental Health programme to ensure we make the best use of our combined strengths and approaches to help enhance GPs practice regarding services to children, young people and families affected by parental mental illness.

State and Territory 'copmi' News to Share

The evaluation of the pilot "Champs Camps" in Tasmania has resulted in funding being approved for further camps, certainly in 2003 and hopefully beyond.

The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation, the Mental Health Branch of the Department of Human Services, and Beyond Blue are supporting the advancement of mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention for children and young people and their families through a project targeting children aged 5 - 12 years who have a parent with a mental illness. The call for submissions for grant funding was made in the Victorian papers on the weekend of the first of February.

The Top End Association for Mental Health (TEAMhealth) hope to have a 'Parent Support Worker' on board by March. This new position has been funded for a three year period under the 'Stronger Families and Communities program' of the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services.
