Launch of Resource Materials
The Hon. Trish Worth, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and
Ageing, and Federal Member for Adelaide today released key resources for people
and services working with children of parents with a mental illness developed
as part of the COPMI project* at the Adelaide Zoo today before 170 invited
guests.
The resources released include the following
? ?Principles and Actions for Services and People Working with
Children of Parents with a Mental Illness? Providing guidance for both
organisations and individuals, the document is the culmination of consultations
with parents who have a mental illness, their carers and children, service
providers and experts over two years.
? ?The Best For Me and My Baby? A booklet developed with and for
women with a mental health problem or mental illness ? and their partners ?
who are thinking about having a baby, are new parents or are about to have a
baby. It encourages health professionals and parents to work together to manage
mental health during pregnancy and early parenthood and provides tips for
parents and for supporting family and friends.
? ?Family Talk? A booklet written with and for families in which a
parent has a mental illness or mental health problem. It contains tips
and information for parents, children and young people and others who care.
Also included are ?press out? cards for children and young people to use to
record their important phone numbers.
? The COPMI website for people working with families affected by
parental mental illness, located at http://www.copmi.net.au . The site
contains specific pages of information for people working in the following
fields - General Practice, Education, Justice, Child Protection, Early
Childhood, Child and Family Health, Youth and Community Work and Mental Health
Services. It also contains information about relevant resource books,
fact-sheets, videos and CDs and information about programmes and services
available in Australia for children of parents with a mental illness and their
families.

* The COPMI (Children Of Parents with a Mental Illness) initiative was
undertaken for the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing
by the Australian Infant, Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health
Association, in association with their project partners COMIC (Children of
Mentally Ill Consumers), Auseinet (Australian Network for Promotion, Prevention
and Early Intervention for Mental Health) and The University of Queensland.
