Mental Health News

The National Mental Health Education and Training Advisory Group (NMHETAG) was established by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care in August 2000 and the group agreed as a first priority, to the development of National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce. The Human Rights Commissioner will conduct an Inquiry into children in immigration detention on behalf of the Commission in 2002. The media release and Terms of Reference for the Inquiry are available at the Commission's website at: http://www.humanrights.gov.au

Quit smoking – new help for people with schizophrenia
Mental health charity SANE Australia and the University of Melbourne have today released Management Guidelines for GPs to help people with schizophrenia reduce or quit smoking.

The Mental Health Council of Australia (MHCA Consumer and Carer Committee) has developed a Consumer and Carer Participation Policy Template endorsed by the MHCA Board at its November meeting. The template contains 14 principles for all public, private, and non government mental health organisations to consider in the development of consumer and carer participation policies.
