** Beyond the Rhetoric in Early Intervention - Bridging the Gap between Education, Health and Crime Prevention conference will be held from 26-28 March 2003. There are some excellent speakers including Dr Clyde Hertzman, Prof Ross Homel, Prof Graham Vimpani and Prof Nick Tilley. On the 28th March 2003, 'Here for Life' presents National Boardshorts Day. A fun day for all Australians to drop their pants and slap on a pair of boardies in the spirit of raising awareness and funds for 'Here for Life'. 'Here for Life' is Australia's peak organisation addressing the prevention of youth suicide.

Commonwealth Allied Health Rural & Remote Scholarships (CAHRRS)
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator Kay Patterson, has approved a $2.1 million training program for allied health professionals in rural and remote areas of Australia.
The scholarship program will be implemented over three years with $600,000 funding available each year. Applications for the first round of scholarship funding under this scheme close on April 15, 2003.

New position created:
Wentworth Area Health Service (Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Penrith) has received funding for a permanent full-time Nurse Practitioner in Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ICAMH). This is the first ICAMH Nurse Practitioner position in NSW and will be a fundamental position in terms of developing the first Clinical Practice Guidelines for such a role.
We would like to advise advanced practice Nurses (in the field of Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health) from throughout Australia, that this position will be advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian over the next two weeks (during March 2003).

The MHCA has been asked to provide a submission to the Productivity Commission's inquiry into the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

An issues paper has also been released by the Productivity Commission, and outlines how to participate in the inquiry, the scope of the inquiry, and issues the Commission is seeking comment and information on.

The closing date for submissions is Thursday 17 April 2003. As such, any comments (including examples/cases where discrimination has occurred and the Act has been effectively/not effectively used) would be appreciated by Monday 7 April. I will collate all comments, and then recirculate the submission to members for final comment prior to submitting it on 17 April. In the meantime I will begin drafting a submission based on preliminary research.

** Arizona Governor announces expansion of reforms
The governor of Arizona announced the statewide expansion of a pilot program for reforming mental health services for children. The pilot program began in response to a lawsuit, brought by the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, that challenged the state's failure to provide adequate services. The pilot program emphasizes providing individualized services, treating children and families with respect, and promoting collaboration among agencies.
