SNIPPET: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Larry Anthony, today officially welcomed 50 young Australians to Canberra for the first meeting of National Youth Roundtable 2003. "National Youth Roundtable 2003 is set to be the best Roundtable yet."

Media release from Larry Anthony (Mon 24th March) included the following:
"There are plenty of measures to help children deal with the fears and anxieties that war and conflict brings. Parents should be aware that there are a range of services that can provide advice and help allay children's fears. These include:
*Young Media Australia www.yma.org.au
*Kids Help Line (ph 1800 55 1800)
*Family Services Australia www.relationships.com.au
*Relationships Australia (ph 02 6285 4466)
*Catholic Family Welfare/Centacare www.catholicwelfare.com.au
"Other useful resources for parents include a comprehensive fact sheet developed by Parenting, Youth and Child Health in South Australia and available from www.cyh.com, and the Australian Early Childhood Association, www.earlychildhoodaustralia.org.au

From the NSW Commission for Children and Young People:
Helping kids with no one to turn to: The NSW Commission for Children and Young People has called on schools and mental health professionals to work together on school campuses so that kids in need do not have to search out help.
The recommendation is one of many in the far-reaching "Report of the Inquiry into the best means of assisting children and young people with no one to turn to".

The Inquiry talked with 240 kids aged 4 to 18 years over two years as well as parents, carers, teachers and professionals working with kids. It found that the most important thing to all kids, regardless of age, gender, cultural or personal background, was relationships.
"Kids experience their lives through relationships and are most vulnerable when they lack strong, nurturing relationships at home. Kids told us that they need a trusted adult to turn to in everyday activities such as school or sport," said the NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People, Gillian Calvert.

The Commission has called for an inter-agency, inter-government approach within the next two years to develop a service charter based on building relationships.
The Report recommends that funding be based on a relationship focus and that agencies develop a set of competencies for staff including advocacy so that kids do not have to navigate the system alone.
