TRAVELS OF THE MIND - PART 1 (All In The Mind: 21/09/2003)
In the town of Geel in Belgium, St Dymphna is the patron saint of the mentally
ill. For centuries her legend has inspired this village's commitment to people
with mental illness. Families in the community foster people who would otherwise
live in psychiatric institutions. In the first of two programs, psychiatrist Dr
Raj Persaud takes us to meet a community with an open heart and mind. http://www.abc.net.au/rn/science/mind/s944140.htm
ALL IN THE MIND: Travels of the Mind - Part 2: Russian Psychiatry after
Communism Sunday 28 September, 1.05pm Radio National Russian psychiatry was
once a tool of the State. In the eyes of the Kremlin there was a fine line
between political dissidence and mental illness and the country's mental
hospitals were isolating and perilous places, packed full. But today the
landscape is changing, with community care on the increase. Psychiatrist Dr Raj
Persaud reports from a country where psychiatry has considerably improved its
professional PR. http://www.abc.net.au/rn/science/mind/
