I am keen to set up a support program for children that have a parent  with a mental illness and would love to hear from anyone who has been involved in such a program.

Are you aware that AICAFMHA has information on line about programmes in Australia, along with a copy of the Report that we wrote on this topic. They can be all accessed at: http://www.aicafmha.net.au/4members/SIGs/COPMI/index.htm

Denise,

We are currently running a Support Group for Adult Children (over 18years ofage) of consumers/parents who have a mental illness. In South Australia there are other support groups for 9-12 years old and 13-18 years old, some are listed on the AICAFMHA website but I can give you further information of specific groups in South Australia

We are coordinating a network focusing on these issues in North Brisbane and there is a futher Qld - wide network recently established. The Project officer coordinating these, Michelle Hegarty (Michelle Hegarty@health.qld.gov.au), would be worth corresponding with as she has been active in this area for some time. A number of us are planning to go to the conference in Melbourne - it seems a good chance to network in this area.

Hi Denise,

We at the Mater Children's Hospital Child and Youth Mental Health Service (in Brisbane) have been running a group for young people who have parents (and relatives) with a mental illness since 1997. This is called 'Kidz Club' and we have designed a kit, as a resource for other professionals interested in running similar groups. The contact person is Jane O'Sullivan (07) 3840-8650.

Hi Denise,

I work in Melbourne for the Mental Health Program, Eastern Health, as the Project Worker for the Parents' Project. The Project started in 1997 originally for twelve months. It now provides primary and secondary consultation and a range of programs for parents who have a mental illness and their families, particularly children. The peer support programs for children are called CHAMPS and are aimed at children aged 7 - 12. They include holiday programs, camps, and regular after school groups. I would be happy to discuss how these are run etc. and send any information. By the way, do you know about the 'Holding It All Together' Conference here in Melbourne April 21 - 24 th 2002.... on this very topic. I can send you info if you don't. Good luck.
Cheers Rose
