AICAFMHA Discussion list - Evaluation of Outreach Program

Discussion List Topic: Evaluation of Outreach Program

Hi

I was wondering if anyone has had any involvement in outreach programs.  We looking at the best means of evaluation for a new program here on the coast.  The program targets youth 12-18 at risk of homelessness, through conflict, drugs, mental health issues etc.  The program will reach out to the young person but also have the capacity to work with the family as well.  It will involve trained and qualified people as well as a trained volunteers to go out to the home.

As this is a pilot we are looking at the best way to evaluate this program to ensure it will be refunded.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have been involved or knows anything that might assist us.

Cheers

Hi Leonie,

There is a program being run here in Tas called "Reconnect" that sounds almost exactly the same as yours. However, their brief is more about risk of homelessness than mental health. It is under the Relationships Australia umbrella ... they seem to be getting funded for everything! I could give you details to contact if you would like to look at their evaluation protocols.

Dear Leonie

I recently read a report that mentioned a service in Victoria, established in 1997, by their Department of Human Services.   This Intensive Mobile Youth Outreach Service (IMYOS) worked alongside CAMHS in nine sites across metro and regional Victoria.  I am sure they would be able to give you useful info on evaluation. The person to contact is Bill McDonald, Project Manager, Dept of Human Services, Victoria (sorry - email/phone details not mentioned in this report).

Hope this helps

Dear Leonie,

I am currently employed as a clinician on the Maroondah Hospital CAMHS Intensive Mobile Youth Outreach Service (known as MAT, or Mobile Adolescent Team).

We are a multidisciplinary team, comprising a consultant pediatrician, a neuropsychologist, 5 full time clinicians carrying reduced case loads, and 3 part time positions who carry pro rata case loads. These clinicians are from a number of different disciplines including psychology, social work and OT. Some of these team members double up as family therapists. We have been in operation for tgree years with a very stable staff group.

Our target client group is young people aged between 12 and 18 years who exhibit "high risk" behaviours, are at risk of or experiencing homelessness, offending, drug use, who have a mental health issue or would benefit from a mental health intervention and have not responded or are unlikely to respond to a traditional CAMHS intevention.

I would be happy to discuss aspects of our work with you. We appear to be obtaining some excellent outcomes with very difficult clients, however, a great deal of our time is spent managing the service system surrounding the young person. These services include Child Protection, accommodation, drug and alcohol and other youth agencies.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions
Anthony Freeman
