AICAFMHA Discussion list - Evaluation tool for kids witnessing DV group program

Discussion List Topic: Evaluation tool for kids witnessing DV group program

A family support service conducting a group program for children aged 8-12 years who have witnessed domestic violence has asked me if there have been any outcome measures (child and/or parent/caregiver) developed specifically for evaluating such groups?

Does anyone have any information on this, or have any suggestions on ways to evaluate this program?

Thanks, Angela White

Hi Angela,

I am not aware of any measures specific to witnessing DV. We have used the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children as a more general measure of PTSD symptoms when we have run groups around this.

Best of luck.

Dear Angela, the Commonwealth DET ran and evaluated DV workshops for young people in 1997 invovling 13,500 yp. The evaluation report is titled: Young People Say "DV - No Way" ISBN 1876753005

Another report useful to look at is the Children and Welfare Reform: Promoting resilience helping young children and parents overcom SA, DV, and Depression by Jane Knitzer - National Centre for Children in Poverty (2000) Columbia University

For your own interest, Angela, I have come across a US study examining parenting programs that could be useful: See How We Grow: A Report on the Status of Parenting Education in the U.S. by Nick Carter (1996) http://www.pewtrust.com/pubs/pubs_item.cfm?image=img5&content_item_id=411&content_type_id=17&page=p2

Hi Jo,

This is a test which is available through one of the Psych testing places. I can't find the organisation which sells it in Australia but it is publsihed by Psychological Assessment Resources(PAR). I'll send a post when I track down the Australian outlet.

Alistair
