NYPS Project Update

NYPS Project Update - 22/10/2004

Welcome to the first update on this journey we are just beginning....

There is lots to do and AICAFMHA will be using this fortnightly electronic bulletin to:
· Keep you updated as to what is happening
· Overview of what we're finding out both in the literature and in the community
· Ask for your HELP in reviewing draft documents, giving ideas and sharing knowledge.
Currently there are about 60 people on the list with approximately half of them registering their programs as well.

AICAFMHA would like to encourage you to circulate the information at the end of this document to your networks in the community.

UPDATE TIME

Reference Group
The reference group met on the 20th of October to give feedback about some of the documents already developed. They included the:
· Work plan - where it was identified there is lots to do and perhaps a rethink about the time line might be needed so we are thinking of extending the project's deadline for a couple of weeks.
· Parameters of the project - many are explained on the website including youth involvement, case study groups to be targeted and our beliefs about what a model needs to include.
· Filter system - as you can imagine there is lots of information out there around youth participation, however, we were keen to work out a process when collating the information to find out what is good practice for this particular project. The reference group had lots of great ideas about avenues to investigate out there. A draft document will be circulated in the near future.

National Consultation Group
The plan is to liaise with the Office for Youths and Commissions throughout Australia and other leading organizations and people in this field to encourage them to join the electronic mailing list and also send them draft documents personally so we can ensure we have their input throughout the journey.... and also when Phase 2 comes along which is about implementing the project we already have some relationship with young people and organizations out there.

FOR CIRCULATION

Subject: National Youth Participation Strategy

The Department of Health and Ageing have contracted Australian Infant Child Adolescent Family Mental Health Association (AICAFMHA) to develop a strategy for the voice and perspective of young people to be incorporated into the development and implementation of national programs funded under the National Mental Health Strategy (NMHS) and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS).

So if you can answer YES to the following 2 questions we want to hear from you and your experiences of youth participation!

1. Are you a young person or do you work with young people around 12-17 years of age?

2. Do you or young people in your organization have ways their voice can be heard? Go to http://www.aicafmha.net.au and click on Youth then fill out the online registration form and/or be part of our discussion list.

We encourage you to forward this document to any networks/programs who you are connected with as we are keen to find out what is already happening out there in the community. The website also provides further information about the project or if you have any further questions please feel free to contact: Dyanna Smith-McCue
